3 biggest takeaways for Sixers following overtime win over Grizzlies

The Philadelphia 76ers walked out of FedEx Forum on Tuesday with a much-needed 139-136 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies. The win snapped a 3-game losing skid and it was also their first win of the season when the Big 3 plays together as Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George all delivered big moments.

Maxey had 34 points and 12 assists, Embiid had 34 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, and George added 17 points. Philadelphia ended its skid while also picking up its first win of the season when the Big 3 plays. The Sixers are now 1-4 when they play and 8-12 overall when those three play and finish a game.

VJ Edgecombe had 25, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals, Dominick Barlow had 12 points and five rebounds, and Quentin Grimes had 11 off the bench.

Here are the three biggest takeaways following the win:

Edgecombe continues to come up large

The Big 3 was terrific, but the rookie deserves a ton of praise for his play in crunch time. No matter what is going on over the course of a game, Edgecombe just steps up when it matters most. He did so again on Tuesday as he scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and then the big 3-pointer in overtime to give the Sixers the win. The focus will be on how well Embiid, Maxey, and George played off each other, but Edgecombe once again shows how unflappable he can be in the guts of the game which is not normal for a rookie.

Big 3 find a rhythm

This was, by far, the best game those three stars have played together. It wasn’t perfect. There’s still some bumps that need to be smoothed out, but Maxey and Embiid controlled everything from their pick-and-roll action while George spaced off those two and put up 3s while also being able to still put the ball on the floor when the time calls for it. Yes, George missed some critical 3s down the stretch, but he had an overall good game and when combining that with how easy Maxey and Embiid were able to generate offense, this is a performance they can hang their hat on.

Grimes bounces back

It has been a tough go at it for Grimes as of late. He entered Tuesday’s contest averaging only 8.1 points and shooting only 26.2% from deep over his previous seven games. He was able to come up with 11 points, knock down a couple of 3s, and finish as a plus-18 in 37 minutes against the Grizzlies. As time moves on, the Sixers are going to need this type of performance from Grimes on a nightly basis, so it’s great for both him and the organization to be able to shake off his recent stretch of tough games and get back on track.
