5 Steelers on the roster bubble ahead of preseason finale vs. Panthers

The Pittsburgh Steelers preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers is just around the corner — and the final roster cuts are due not long after.

There are only 53 spots available to make the Steelers’ regular season roster, and these five players are on the bubble just days away from Pittsburgh’s preseason Week 3 matchup.

QB Skylar Thompson

One of the most surprising preseason standouts is on the outside of the 53-man roster looking in. Unless Pittsburgh rolls out four quarterbacks or places rookie Will Howard on IR, Thompson’s final snap as a Steeler could come in the preseason finale against the Panthers.

CB Cory Trice Jr.

Despite many hoping Trice could develop into the next lockdown corner for the Steelers, injuries have derailed the early portions of his career. Boasting arguably one of the most stacked cornerback rooms in the NFL, the Trice experiment in Pittsburgh could be coming to an end very soon.

P Corliss Waitman

Following Cameron Johnston’s season-ending injury last year, Waitman stepped up admirably as the Steelers’ starting punter. The veteran Johnston is back, however, and despite Waitman holding his own in the positional battle throughout training camp and preseason, he hasn’t necessarily done enough to warrant releasing a proven starter.

LB Mark Robinson

Robinson’s strongest selling point has been his efficiency on special teams — but that may not be enough to justify his spot in a crowded linebacker room. The return of Cole Holcomb and the signing of Malik Harrison do Robinson no favors either — and it may take a miracle to survive the final roster cuts arriving shortly.

DE DeMarvin Leal

The former 2022 third-rounder never truly lived up to expectations, and his last chance may have already passed him by just days away from the Steelers’ preseason finale. After Pittsburgh completely overhauled the defensive line in both the draft and free agency, it’s difficult to imagine Leal making it onto the 53-man roster in 2025.
