While American tennis sensation Coco Gauff has certainly established herself as a star in the making in recent years, going back to her 2023 victory in the U.S. Open and her appearance in the final of the French Open the previous year, she has still be building up to her real breakthrough moment, that time at which her star is no longer in the making, but is fully made.

That might have happened on Saturday at Roland Garros, where Gauff, the No. 2 seed in this year’s French Open, was sharp and took advantage of top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set takedown that saw her rally after losing the first set, 6-7(5), to take the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4.

It was a blustery day played with the roof open despite the threat of rain and some occasional misting. But Gauff came through even as Sabalenko, who committed 70 unforced errors, was stalking a comeback in the final set, the 21-year-old collapsing to the court after the became the first American woman to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 2015.

Hours later, Gauff took to social media to send a message to fans and supporters.

She wrote: “wow. this means so much to me truly….french open champion i worked so hard for this moment and for it to have happened is insane. thank you God and thank you everyone. this means the world…. I ‘m still in shock honestly can’t find the words but all I can say for now is just thank you and never give up on your dreams.”

The post drew 1.2 million views.

Sabalenka, for her part, was a major favorite entering the match. She had beaten Gauff in the Madrid Open last month, and has been impressive this season, also reaching the final of the Australian Open.

Sabalenka, who appeared irritable throughout the tournament, was less than gracious in defeat, though, seemingly blaming the conditions for her loss and saying that Gauff would not have won if semfinialist Iwa Swiatek had gotten to the final.

“Conditions were terrible, and she simply was better in these conditions than me,” Sabalenka said in her press conference. “I think it was the worst final I ever played.”
