Marshall trounces Jacksonville, 54-0

Marshall’s Mavericks made winning look easy by shutting out Jacksonville 54-0 Friday night at the historic Tomato Bowl.

The margin of victory for Marshall (5-2, 2-1) was the third greatest in the history of the series between the two schools.

Jacksonville fell to 0-8, 0-4.

Doug Johnson had touchdown runs of 69 and 22 yards for Marshall while Denijh Montgomery recorded a pair of 1-yard scoring trots for the Mavs.

Marshall quarterback Alton Henderson also scored a 1-yard touchdown and hurled a 43-yard touchdown pass to Jamarion Sparks.

Sparks also intercepted a Jacksonville pass in the second half and returned it 44 yards for six points.

The Mavs led 28-0 at halftime.

Defensively, Marshall slammed the door shut on he Tribe offense. Jacksonville was not able to advance the ball past the Marshall 30-yard all night.

Indian quarterback Trent Clater led Jacksonville in rushing by netting 37 yards in five carries.

Jacksonville was held to 184 total yards in the affair, with 99 yards coming by land and 85 by air.

The triumph by shutout was Marshall’s second of the season – the Mavs blanked Palestine, 41-0, in a non-district game on Sept. 17.

Mario Rodriquez recovered a Mav fumble in the red zone with less than a minute to go in the opening stanza to snuff out a Marshall drive that had moved he ball all the way down to the Tribe 13-yard line.

Nest Friday the Tribe will travel o Mount Pleasant.

The Tigers (1-6, 1-2) dropped a 21-15 decision to league-leading Texarkana-Texas High Friday night in Texarkana.
