Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom enters his third season with the team after missing a majority of the 2024 season recovering from his second Tommy John surgery.
After nine seasons with the New York Mets, deGrom agreed in December 2022 to a five-year, $185 million deal with the Rangers, which includes a club option for a sixth year.
Since breaking in as the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year, he’s cemented himself as one of the greatest pitchers baseball has ever seen, collecting two Cy Young Awards, four All-Star selections and two top-10 MVP finishes over a decorated twelve-year career.
DeGrom’s latest masterpiece arrived Wednesday in a matchup with the Baltimore Orioles. He carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning against the Orioles, striking out seven batters before surrendering a single to Colton Cowser. He finished the night with eight strikeouts in Texas’s 7-0 shutout victory.
After the game, the Rangers’ official X account summed up his performance in five words, “Somehow he keeps getting better.”

Catcher Jonah Heim added on in the same post, “That’s the best I’ve ever seen him,” in awe of his greatness.
Through 16 starts this season, deGrom is 8-2 with an excellent 2.08 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 95.1 innings.
His combination of late-life velocity, pinpoint command and devastating breaking balls has kept lineups off balance for over a decade, and he has continued to evolve even as he ages–a testament to his longevity.
With Texas trailing the final AL wild-card spot by two games, his continued dominance is pivotal to the Rangers’ playoff push. DeGrom was part of the 2023 Rangers squad that won the World Series, but he missed the postseason that year after undergoing elbow surgery.
