The New York Mets were one of the best teams in all of MLB earlier in the season, but as the end approaches, they’ve become one of the sloppiest—at the worst possible time. To make matters worse, star slugger Pete Alonso continues to avoid committing to his future in New York.
“But again, we’ll see what happens. I love it, it’s great, but you can’t really predict anything. And for me… I am focused on trying to put this thing across the finish line. I haven’t really thought about the free agent thing until we’re talking about it right now,” Alonso said. “It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can’t get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we’ll see.”
On Thursday, the Mets made history for all the wrong reasons, becoming the first MLB team in the modern era to suffer a bizarre and embarrassing loss to the Phillies.
“The Mets are the only MLB team in the modern era to score 4+ runs in the first inning but have nobody reach base the rest of the game and end up losing,” Opta Stats posted.
Just a day later, things got even worse against the Texas Rangers. The first inning was so disastrous that ESPN’s Jeff Passan weighed in on how far the Mets have fallen.
“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn’t a collapse. It’s a disintegration,” Passan posted.

Passan didn’t hold back—and with good reason. Even if the Mets somehow survive long enough to sneak into the playoffs, it’s hard to see them going far. New York has gone from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.
The Mets are currently clinging to the final Wild Card spot, just ahead of the Cincinnati Reds. But the season is quickly slipping through their fingers—and the team is beginning to completely fall apart.
