Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Buchanan has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.
The player had been unattached since parting ways with Cape Town Spurs following their relegation from the topflight to the second tier at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Buchanan played for several teams in the PSL, including Bloemfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United and AmaZulu.
The pinnacle of his career was at Celtic, where his exploits caught the eye of Chiefs, who lured him to Naturena ahead of the 2016/17 season.
However, he didn’t live up to expectations as he only managed to make 10 appearances across all competitions and chipped in with a solitary assist.
Overall, Buchanan played 177 matches in his professional football career and scored three goals with 14 assists.
“From an 8-year-old kid at Ajax with a dream, to living that dream across pitches in the country – I can only be grateful,” wrote Buchanan on Instagram.
“Football has given me everything: memories, lessons, friendships, and moments I’ll carry for life. As this chapter closes, I give all glory to God for every step, every setback, and every comeback. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey – teammates, coaches, fans, family, and friends. This game shaped me. But most importantly, it prepared me for what’s next.”
