La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Roma are preparing to cut short Evan Ferguson’s loan in January, although the early return would still require Brighton’s approval.

‘Evan Ferguson’s spell at Roma isn’t destined to last long. Perhaps just the four games remaining before the transfer market opens,’ La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Tuesday.

According to the Italian newspaper, Roma are disappointed by the striker’s performances and are eager to send him back to Brighton next month.

Roma’s desire alone isn’t enough, however, as Brighton would also need to approve the termination of the loan deal.

Ferguson joined the Giallorossi on loan last summer and the Serie A side hold an option to buy for circa €35m.

Ferguson was expected to get more playing time following Dovbyk’s injury in recent weeks, but the Brighton loanee also had fitness issues with his ankle and has never really settled under Gasperini.

He scored his first Serie A goal against Cremonese earlier this month, but that has been his only strike in 14 outings with the Giallorossi.

Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler has refused to rule out Ferguson’s return, especially after an injury to Stefanos Tzimas.

Roma are willing to sign another centre-forward in the January transfer window with Josua Zirkzee (Man United), Yuri Alberto (Corinthians) and Giacomo Raspadori (Atletico Madrid) already linked with a move to the Olimpico.
