Yankees outfield uncertainty after injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Domínguez exited Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after experiencing discomfort in his left thumb while sliding into second base during the fifth inning. Despite the scare, the team gave a fairly encouraging update in the seventh inning.
Dominguez has a left thumb contusion, and his status is day-to-day. Aaron Boone told reporters after the game that Dominguez would be going for tests when he gets back to New York.
Domínguez, 22, has consistently contributed to the Yankees’ lineup this season. In 48 games, he is batting .244 with six home runs, 24 RBIs, and a .759 OPS. His recent performance has been particularly notable, with a .904 OPS in May, including a walk-off home run against the Texas Rangers on May 21.
The Yankees have an off day on Monday, which could help Dominguez avoid missing too many games. Should Domínguez require time on the injured list, however, the Yankees would face a significant challenge in their outfield.
Currently, Aaron Judge is entrenched in right field. Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham have shared duties in center field, with Dominguez getting settled in as the everyday left fielder. With Giancarlo Stanton still on the injured list, that allows manager Aaron Boone to alternate the designated hitter between the outfielder who is off and Ben Rice.
So, Bellinger could move over to left field, and they could start Grisham in centerfield.
Dominguez is in his first season, starting the year with the major league team. He has been limited by injuries in the past, including needing Tommy John surgery just 10 games after he made his big league debut in 2023.
