YouTube Gold: Bloody Hansbrough

The Duke-UNC rivalry has had some very intense moments over the years. The 1961 fight between Art Heyman and, well, everybody on the UNC bench was one. Heyman gleefully claimed that he hit Frank McGuire in the nuts and years later, he saw McGuire who told him, “it still hurts, Artie!”

There was the Fred Lind game (he hates being defined by that but if you know, you know) in 1968 when Lind came out of nowhere to help Duke win in triple overtime and was carried off the court.

In 1978, Gene Banks mocked Phil Ford by dribbling out the clock as the Blue Devils won and in 2007…well, let’s talk about that one.

In 2007, UNC was ahead late in Chapel Hill and Duke was not going to win. In the last timeout though, Mike Krzyzewski told his team basically to die hard and least to not to give up any layups. Greg Paulus let one slip by though which didn’t go over well.

Tyler Hansbrough was on the line after that with 17.5 to play and missed the free throw. He snuck in and got his own rebound and when he started to go up, Henderson, perhaps listening to Coach K’s advice, came in to take the shot out.

Unfortunately, he took Hansbrough out too.

Henderson sent Hansbrough to the floor with a very bloody nose. Being Hansbrough, he got up fairly quickly and came after Henderson but a lot of people got between them before things could get worse.

In the end, Hansbrough suffered a broken nose and, we think, had some dental surgery. Henderson was ejected and received a one-game suspension.

A decade later, Hansbrough and Henderson hosted a podcast and let it all go. If anyone is still worked up about something that happened 18 years ago, you should probably follow suit.
