The best way to snap a five-game losing streak?

Apparently, it’s to play the best team in the National League.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, in 11 innings to end their losing ways. Brandon Marsh hit a ball over the outfielders’ heads to the wall with the bases loaded  to receive his water bath when his teammates mobbed him.

The Phillies had to score two in the 11th to the game after Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled in the top of the the inning and provide the Cubs with a lead. JT Realmuto immediately answered with a lead-off double to score Nick Castellanos. Bryson Stott and Otto Kemp then both reached on bunts, leading to Marsh’s heroics.

Philadelphia had lost its last two games against the Toronto Blue Jays then were swept over the weekend by in-state rival, and NL Central last-place bunch, the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

The ending belied the quality of both starting pitchers. Matt Boyd gave up two runs, just one earned, while striking out eight over six innings for the Cubs. Zack Wheeler did one better, giving up just a single run in his six, striking out seven.

Ian Happ hit a solo home run in the eighth inning off Phillies reliever Matt Strahm to tie the game. Kyle Tucker started the scoring in the first with a solo shot off Wheeler.

The Phillies tied the game in the fourth when Realmuto plated on a run on a fielder’s choice. Weston Wilson then gave Philadelphia the lead in the fifth with an RBI single, scoring Kemp.
